How + Where to Adopt a Pet for the Holidays

The holidays is a very popular time of year to gain a new family member and, honestly, I do think it’s a great idea! For some, it’s easier to purchase a pet then it is to adopt, so this is my attempt to encourage those that are thinking of getting a pet to adopt by giving you a list of places that you can adopt pets from!

I’m not saying that adopting a pet is for everyone because, to be completely honest, I know very well that it might not be suitable for everyone. However, if you can make some time to see if it is possible to adopt then I think the chances of you adopting a pet is much higher! I’ve laid out a general process and some shelters {both local and online} where you might be able to find your new family member.

Now, if you find that adoption is really not feasible for you then consider making a donation to a local adoption agency. There are tons of pets that need a forever home and making a donation {of any size} will be very helpful! Donations go to vet bills, pet’s food, and even the individuals that go out of their way to rescue animals from a bad situation. Every penny counts!

How To Adopt

Most adoption agencies or organizations will require you to fill out a form, provide referrals, ask about your living situation, etc. This process is important for adoption agencies because they want to make sure that the pet isn’t going to be given up again. When you visit an adoption website, make sure you look for the adoption application, fill it out, and submit it.

Sometimes adoption agencies have events where they bring some of the pets that are up for adoption. If you have filled out the adoption application and have gotten pre-approved – usually if you find a pet at an event that you want to take home, the process is a little bit easier {not the case for every adoption agency}.

Where To Adopt

*This list is not an exclusive list, just what I was able to find from my research. There are a ton of amazing organizations and adoption agencies – the list below is just a few!

Wise Animal Rescue

WISE is a foster-based rescue in New Jersey dedicated to rescuing dogs of all ages and breeds from places where they are no longer wanted or are not being properly cared for. By partnering with veterinary practices that support Wise’s work, the rescue is able to save dogs’ lives and restore them back to health.

Central to Wise’s mission is to ensure that all dogs are spayed/neutered, up-to-date on shots, and microchipped. Prior to adoption, all of the dogs are placed into responsible loving foster homes to be socialized and trained rather than put in a shelter environment.

See Spot Rescued

See Spot Rescued is not a shelter. See Spot Rescued is a non-profit 501(c)3 dog rescue based in Jersey City and South Street Seaport, NYC, staffed entirely by volunteers who work full-time jobs while coordinating the rescue, vetting, medical care, transportation, fostering, and adoption of as many amazing dogs as possible.

Muddy Paws Rescue

Muddy Paws Rescue is a New York City 501c3 nonprofit organization working to save the lives of thousands of dogs in need through foster-based care, advocacy, and community outreach.

#12DaysofHappyTails Our 9th day features a very sweet mama pup who joined us with her puppies in tow. Honey, formerly known as Mama Kelsey, and her seven 6-week old puppies came to New York from our partner shelter in Kentucky. Honey was a devoted, playful and sweet mama, and she watched her puppies find their homes one by one before it was time for her to find a forever family. Sabrina and Alan had always been passionate about rescuing, and once they officially moved in together, a dog was their next step. They started the process right away— going so far as to write "get a dog" on their calendar! Their search took them to social media, where they noticed our sweet mama on our Instagram page. From the very first glance at Honey, Sabrina said there was "something that she was just drawn to." At this point, Honey had met with several potential adopters but, unfortunately, they all fell through. She continued to patiently in her foster home for a few more weeks. Meanwhile, Sabrina and Alan submitted their adoption application and waited for the day that they would be approved and were finally able to meet Honey in person. “It’s hard to find the words that can explain how everything changed when we met her that day," says Sabrina. The newly formed family bonded almost instantly. Sabrina and Alan say that Honey fills their lives with more love and affection than they ever thought possible. The majority of their daily decisions are made with Honey in mind. She's spoiled with love, toys, and treats. Ice cream is her favorite. Honey makes them laugh every day — she's quite a little drama queen, letting out an exaggerated sigh whenever she wants attention. And, of course, Sabrina and Alan are happy to oblige. Honey came to New York with one family but has since found a new one, where she is the center of attention living every day to the fullest. Our #MuddyPawsPack is so proud to have saved Mama Honey and her seven pups and helped each of them find a well-deserved loving home. Donate via link in bio to support our lifesaving mission to help even more pups like Kelsey find their forever homes in 2020.
